I am a "Face First" teacher. Fix the club face first before anything else.
All sorts of other issues stem from an open or closed (usually open) face at impact:
-Failure to move into the left side properly on the downswing or even backing up at impact
-Standing up early on the downswing
-Flipping through the impact zone
-Casting or early release
-Failure to utilize wrist hinge / lack of club head speed
I usually have new students start by working on getting the club face more square coming into the hitting zone first. For beginners, this usually means a grip adjustment. For more experienced players this could mean working on release or tweaking club path.
I am a big believer in "feel" over "positions". Like Padraig Harrington has said "When learning a sport early in life, no kid ever worried about their exact positions. They just hit the ball". Therefore, I use training aids more than video to give feedback. Video and visual feedback are important but creating a "feel" is the most important teaching method in my opinion.
